Why Exercising is Important to your Health

It is often common to think about what it looks like to be fit on the outside of your body. The greatest motivational factors are the external changes that result from increased physical activity. People want to see in the mirror or on the scale the results of their hard work. The thought of leaner legs or a slimmer waist often get people off the couch and into the gym. However, what if I actually told you that the true benefits of your body lie beneath the surface?

External changes that result from living an active, healthy lifestyle happen slowly. Yet, many changes which happen inside the body start to happen as soon as one begins an exercise routine. Positive internal changes in the body far outweigh the changes seen on the outside.

Cardio 101

Cardio-respiratory exercise, also called ‘cardio’ is the word used to describe exercises that work on your heart and circulatory system. Cardio exercises are movements that make the circulatory system work better. Examples of cardio exercises include cycling, running and even swimming.

Facts about cardio exercise

1. Lower resting heart rate

The heart works hard during exercise by pumping blood at a faster rate. As a result, the heart becomes efficient at pumping blood in general. Consequently, everyday activities seem easier over time because the heart works less to sustain these activities. Therefore, changes in a reduced resting heart rate.

2. Weight loss

Increased bodily activity level with cardio exercise helps the body burn extra fuel so as to meet the increased need for energy. Fats stored in the body are the primary source for a prolonged cardio exercise. This increased energy expenditure, together with reduced calorie intake lead to significant weight loss.

3. Reduced stress

Cardio promotes production of the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters called endorphins. Cardio often feels like meditation in motion. Your stress levels may reduce once you start exercising and focusing on what you are doing. Although you may feel physically tired, you also feel mentally rejuvenated.
